I sent some of my comics to my friend yesterday. His response was more positive than I expected. He said, “You’re right. You‘re not funny. But I like your comics. They are weird.”
Then he said my drawings reminded him of Picasso, which made me chuckle. Then when he clarified, “I didn’t mean your artwork is like Picasso’s, I meant you look like Picasso in your self-portraits – but in a good way.”
I’ll take that as a compliment. I was never a fan of Picasso’s artwork.
I’ve been having fun creating comics to accompany my essays. My sketch work is crude, but I’m pleased that the people, objects and scenes are identifiable. As for the humor, let’s just say my goal is sardonic, wry commentary vs. “bust a gut” laughter.
They amuse me – which is good enough.
I crack myself up.
And this, my friends, is one of my secrets to happiness. As somewhat of a loner/ introvert / hermit/ weirdo, I am constantly amusing myself. The fact that most of these amusements are low cost is the icing on the cake.
- For Christmas, I repaired my furnace after 3 days of standing outside in frigid temps perched on a ladder holding a hairdryer against a frozen pipe for hours every morning during a record cold snap. The day home depot opened, I spent under $100 for supplies and fixed this.
- After 4 years of using a wobbly PVC prop to raise my clothesline, I made an old school clothesline prop like my Aunt Essie had from a $2 piece of wood I picked up from Home Depot. Every time I hang my wet towel, swimsuit and laundry on the line, it makes me smile.
- I dropped 1.5 lbs this week, probably from shivering my a$$ off standing on a ladder in sub 10 degree weather. A few pounds makes a huge difference in how I feel and inflates my ego disproportionality.
- I started growing my winter beard and mustache again. I skipped shaving a few days during the cold snap because I couldn’t bear the thought of standing wet and shivering in front of the mirror shaving. Now, after a week, I’m thoroughly enjoying my new Captain Ahab look.
Today is New Year’s Eve. I’m thrilled that I found a 4th back-up pool at the YMCA that is open throughout the NYE/NY holiday so I can swim. I had so much extra time, that I was able to vacuum and mop the entire house too!
Tomorrow, on New Year’s Day, I’ll be fixing a slow leak in my toilet. I’m reading 2 good books and have a half dozen booked more on my shelf. My fridge is stocked. My bills are paid. A few days ago, I participates as a guest on the solo podcast.
Somedays I cannot believe how much fun I am having.
This has been one of those days.
