A neighbor told me there were firetrucks and EMTs across the street from my home last night. I slept through the entire incident. They were at the home of a young couple who recently moved here. I introduced myself to the couple a few weeks ago and wave to them when I see them out. Otherwise we don’t speak to one another. They don’t seem that interested in connecting with me.
However, since I’m outside walking a lot and I workout in my garage that faces their home, I’m aware of many of their comings and goings. I recognized their parents’ cars. I know when they have weekend visitors. I noticed when their baby was born back in October. I have a vague idea of their hybrid work schedules etc.
After I heard about the 911 incident, I thought that maybe I should check in to see if they were OK. Then I thought, “It’s none of my business“.
Obviously they are OK, that’s what emergency responders are there for. Whatever the problem was, they handled. It’s not like I’ve seen a parade of mourners show up since then. Nor are there any obvious signs of ongoing problems.
Plus, we’re not friends. I know their names. They’ve met me. My front door is literally 40 steps across the street from theirs. If they needed or wanted my help, they would have walked over.
So my interest, while perhaps rooted in wanting to show empathy and kindness, is also from curiosity.
I’ve learned that sometimes my curiosity is best left unfulfilled. It’s better for my neighbors. And it is better for me.
So I’m not getting on Nextdoor to ask questions. I’m not checking our local 911 call archive. I’m not asking my other neighbors about it.
It’s none of my business.
If it ever becomes my business, I will express kindness and empathy and do whatever I can to help.
