Two different neighbors across the street have 3 cars. Each of them only has two people living in their homes. Both also have garages that are packed with stuff, so they have to park their cars in their driveways and on the street. Another neighbor lives alone and has 3 cars that mostly sit parked in his driveway 24/7. Wow.
When I’m working out in the morning, I see my neighbors jockeying their cars around. If they have visitors, they have to park down the street to free up space. Even without visitors, there is often a car-shuffle happening in order to get the right car into or out of the driveway.
I’m not judging them. They can do what they want. It’s interesting observe this all while I’m doing yoga.
I have never kept a spare car. Initially, my wife had a car and I rode the bus until I could afford to buy a car for myself.
We had an extra car once for a few weeks after I had purchased a car before selling my existing beater. It was a pain just to do the car shuffle for parking even then.
Today, I don’t even like the fact that I have a bicycle that I don’t use. I bought it at the beginning of the pandemic and rode it until the pools reopened a few months later. I never ride it all now.
I suppose if I was rich, I would have at least one other car. I would definitely have a heated, indoor lap pool. And a barn with ample space for working out.
But I’m not rich.
My “backup” car is Uber and Lyft. They’ve been fine on the rare occasions I needed them.
