My neighbor was going out of town for a few days and asked if I could keep an eye out for a package that might be delivered while she was away. Of course, I said yes.
When it arrived a few days later, I sent her a text to let her know I had it and would drop it off once she returned home. She was very appreciative of my small effort and thanked me several times.
From my perspective, this was no big deal. It’s what neighbors do for each other.
To my surprise, a few days later I received a gift from her. It was a small decorative plaque with a dog friendly saying on it plus a note thanking me. It was totally unexpected.
I sent her a quick note of thanks and put the plaque in my kitchen. It made me smile.
I thought two things:
- She’s a mensch.
- She’s got class. This is yet another perfect example of it.*
It’s great to be her neighbor. I think people like this are all around us. They reveal themselves in some of our simple interactions in daily life.
*The first year after I moved here, this same neighbor made me homemade pierogis and later Christmas cookies. We were both raised near Pittsburgh so these were a taste from home from me. Like above, classy.
