After dinner, I often surf Reddit looking for something interesting to read or watch. Recently, I’ve been visiting the GenX subreddit and it’s been a blast. There are always a few “remember when” posts that have pictures, videos, music or text of things from my youth.
Last night someone posted a video of jumping his Evel Knievel motorcycle guy jumping over a table filled with other 1970s era dolls including GI Joe, Stretch Armstrong and Spiderman. I loved playing with my GI Joes and Fighting Furies dolls when I was a kid.
Another post was a picture of Chi Chi’s food which triggered dozens of responses of people’s favorite memories of the now defunct restaurant. In the 8th grade, I was top in my Spanish Class. As a reward for being #1 in our respective classes, our Spanish teacher took me and two other kids to Chi Chi’s for dinner. The only Mexican food I ever ate up until then was Old El Paso tacos at home. Chichi’s chips and salsa were out of this world. Then I feasted on a combo platter of tacos, beans, Spanish rice, and cheese enchilada. Finally, we had fried ice cream (which I only read about in Spanish class). I couldn’t believe how wonderful the food tasted! I had never tasted anything like it before. Chi Chi’s triggered a lifelong love of Mexican food for me.
The last post I watched was a VHS recording of high schoolers in the late 80s. It showed kids hanging out front before class, walking through the hallways, going up the stairs, laughing, running to class and other normal, everyday activities. The hairstyles, the clothing and the school made me reminisce about my best high school years.
The subreddit also has many posts from commercials, groceries, and daily life of GenXers that I could instantly relate to.
If you, dear reader, are a GenXer like me, I encourage you to visit the GenX subreddit. It’s guaranteed to bring a few smiles and laughs.
