Dropped The Pretense

Posted on January 5, 2025January 5, 2025 by Steve Ainslie

This year, my sister and I forgot (or intentionally skipped) sending each other “Merry Christmas” texts.

I realized this when my mother was recounting her Christmas dinner at my sister’s home and said to me, “We all missed you”. My first thought was “Yeah right. You missed me so much that nobody even bothered to send me a text.”

I haven’t had Christmas dinner with my mother in 20 years. I haven’t had Christmas dinner with my sister in at least 25 years.

We don’t miss each other at Christmas. If we did, we’d have tried to get together at least once in 20 years.

My annual “Merry Christmas” text with my sister is kind of pointless which might be why we skipped it this year.

We share a history and parents, but have not had much of a relationship since we were children.

It seems fitting we both dropped this last vestige of one.
