I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. I always thought the idea was stupid. When I need to change something, the time to change it is right then – not on New Year’s Day.
Throughout each year, I make many decisions to change something in my life. Lately I’ve been thinking of a few things I would like to add into my life in 2022.
Here they are:
- Make new friends – After 2 years of Covid restrictions, I’m beyond starved for friendships. I’ve been checking out Meetups but haven’t found any that look interesting yet. I may take some classes. I’ve been more outgoing and conversational with people I see in my neighborhood and plan to befriend a few of them.
- Date – Already started.
- Learn to dance – I think I have to take lessons for this. I’ve watched some YouTube videos but think real life training would be much better.
- Draw – Take a class in drawing. I would like to get good at doing pencil sketches.
- Paint in Watercolors – I’ll learn this on my own watching videos and through trial and error.
- Sculpture – I want to create some 3D art pieces for my home most likely from reclaimed items I find in nature like rocks and sticks. I think this will be 100% make it up as I go.
- Drum with other musicians – I cannot imagine ever wanting to travel to do shows anywhere (too much effort to setup/breakdown/travel) but I think it would be fun to jam with others in my house.
- Make some jewelry – I want to make some bracelets and necklaces for myself. But I don’t want to invest much time, money or energy into this. I may end up just buying some, along with a few rings. I like wearing rings but have made the intentional choice to put my best ring – my wedding band – away. I don’t want it to drive away any potential 1%ers and more importantly, I wouldn’t want to make anyone I might be dating feel awkward. For me, the ring is just a ring, not a symbol. But that’s not how society sees it.
- Play Frisbee – #1 and #2 above should help me find some people to play with.
- Learn to speak French. I have always loved how French sounds. Maybe I’ll try duolingo.
My prediction is that I’ll achieve more than half of these. Some will drop off because I’ll lose interest in them. I’ll undoubtedly find other interests, challenges and skills to work on during the year to pursue.
