When I was a kid, I like to listen to the oldies. Oldies was music from the 50s like Elvis, DooWop, the BeachBoys, Chuck Berry, Sam Cook and the Big Bopper. So I was pleasantly surprised when I scanned the radio the other day and landed on an oldies station.
Until they started playing Nirvana, ACDC, Motley Crue, SoundGarten, Pearl Jam, Everclear and the Foo Fighters.
Oldies? This was the music I listened to in high school and my 20s. It may be 30 years old but it’s not Oldies to me.
I did a quick google search on Gen-X oldies and found lots of posts from fellow Gen-Xers that they too were dismayed at what’s called Oldies today.
I still listen to more music from the 1970s and the 1990s than any other decades. I like Classic Rock and I like Alt Rock. Occasionally, I find a gem in the 2000s and 2010s.
Most new music, I don’t listen to. I sample it to see if I’m missing anything, but, other than a few exceptions, I don’t enjoy it.
Oldies. Hm. I guess I’m right where I belong.
