Government Solutions

Posted on May 6, 2025 by Steve Ainslie

I am skeptical about counting on the government to solve our problems. My experience is that government usually responds too late and too insignificantly – long after I have dealt with (and suffered with) my dilemma for years – or even decades.

I was listening to a podcast today when an example of this occurred. An online gambling commercial played, encouraging people to bet from “the convenience and comfort of your phone.” At the very end of the commercial, in 3x speed and 1/2x volume a disclaimer noted “dial 1-800-xxx-xxxx for a gambling problem.”

The disclaimer is how the government addresses people addicted to gambling, deceived by gambling ads or financially destroys by losses.

Gee thanks.

It is exactly the same way the government protects us from being manipulated by pharmaceutical commercials and by political advertising. Both of these also have tiny print, low volume, hyper speed disclaimers at the end of their commercials too.

What is the impact of this government intervention?

Zero, I suspect.

Thanks for nothing.

But, at least I know what to expect.
