When a celebrity or multi-millionaire sells one of their homes, it’ll occasionally pop-up in my newsfeed with a link to a video tour. Although I don’t pay much attention to famous people, I will check out their homes. I’m curious to see what you get for $10 Million, $50 Million or more.
Usually the houses are huge with dozens of bedrooms, bathrooms and 20,000+ square foot floor plans. Often they are beachfront properties. Many have theater rooms, grand staircases, massive foyers, big chandeliers, top end appliances, etc. They are meticulously landscaped with beautiful pools, patios and outdoor spaces. I see some fabulous library like offices filled with floor to ceiling hardwood bookshelves and gleaming antique furniture. They have long, custom stone driveways leading to 3 car, 5 car, and 10 car garages. Walk-in closets are actual full size rooms, complete with built in furniture, chairs and dressing areas.
And, of course, the kitchens are outfitted with the latest high-end appliances, often with multiple ovens, fridges and sinks.
What I always notice in the kitchens and dining rooms are the chairs. There are so many chairs. It’s not uncommon to see 10 chairs in the kitchen. In the dining room, there’ll be a full banquet table & chairs that can seat 20 or more.
It makes me think:
- How many chairs can you sit on?
- How man cars can you drive?
- How much do you spend on gardening?
- Can you wife hear you when you call her name from downstairs?
Lucky for me, I love my little house and have no mansion envy.
Still, if I was wealthy enough to afford something better, I’d consider it. I think I’d probably have homes in different locations so I could follow the warm weather and escape when the possibility of disaster or inconvenience might strike (fires, hurricanes, winter, major repairs).
But I think I’d limit myself to smaller places that had just what I needed and nothing more.
When I moved into my home, I bought a small kitchen table with two chairs. In four years, I’ve used both chairs twice. Otherwise, one has been my kitchen chair and the other is used as a dog leash holder in my bedroom.
I would have been fine with just one chair.
