I Can’t Handle TikTok, YouTube & Netflix

Posted on August 29, 2021September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

I’ve got 4 extra hours a day right now because I cannot exercise while I am recovering from my hernia surgery.

Normally my days are packed from sunrise to sunset with physical activity – gymnastics, calisthenics, yoga, swimming and walking.

By the time I sit down for dinner, I am pleasantly exhausted.

Since this is not an option right now, I’ve filled my time with writing, drumming, walking and far too much screen time.

I’ve looked at TikTok and YouTubeShorts for hours. I’ve watched 2 entire TV series on Netflix – a mafia show and a zombie show.

My brain is shorting out.

TikTok and YouTube are inane. It’s like watching people dance under a strobe light. Short video clips of anything with no rhyme or reason on continuity.

Netflix binging is different. I get sucked into an addictive fantasy world. Except there’s nothing good about these fantasies. What do I learn? Nothing. Is there enjoyment? Not really. It’s just a way to pass time while being inert.

So I started playing online chess and online Othello.

I’ve searched for e-books to download and read.

And every day I increase the number of walks I take.

I can’t wait for a few more weeks when I can get back to the life I want. In the meantime, I’ve decided I’ve had enough of TikTok and YouTube shorts. I won’t be looking at them again.

As for Netflix – my subscription ends in 3 weeks. By next week, I expect I will have watched absolutely anything I care to and will likely log off again.
