Only occasionally has a candidate I voted for won an election.
This spans Primary Elections, Federal Elections, State Elections and Local Elections.
Most of the time, my preferred candidate is an independent or a third-party or someone who doesn’t fall in line with the Dems or GOP. They often don’t make it past the primaries or into the later debates.
So Ie been thinking I might just stop voting altogether.
I’ve always been told that my vote matters by parents, teachers, government and media.
Apparently not – if you look at the results.
I used to think that at least my vote would be viewed as a “protest vote” and that whoever won the election would be aware there are some citizens who are not supportive of his/her policies. I thought this might make the winner act better and even modify his positions.
I don’t think this anymore.
What I see from nearly all politicians are self-serving actions that are in the politician’s personal interests and that reward the politicians supporters.
I hear rhetoric and false promises from both parties. I see big contributors getting contracts, laws amended, monopoly support and other considerations.
I hear lip service about “serving the public”.
But whenever I “follow the money”, it’s always the same old bullshit.
Once – in a great, great while – I observe an outlier – a politician who seems to be genuinely serving his constituents. Usually this person doesn’t last long as a politician. (Especially if I vote for him in the next election.)
So why bother?
If my vote doesn’t’t make a difference, then what’s the point?
- To honor some sense of history?
- To live up to some heroic story of one man, one vote, no government without representation, the American Revolution and all that?
- Because people fought for “my right” to vote?
Hmm.
This story has been fed to me for my entire life.
I am not buying it anymore.
