As my friend lamented his recent breakup, he concluded with something I wasn’t expecting to hear. He said, “I want her to recognize how much I tried, that I was a great partner unlike her previous boyfriends. I want her to acknowledge that. I want justice!”
It made me laugh.
My response was, “Good luck with that.”
There is no justice. There is only what is.
My friend doesn’t want justice anymore than anyone else proclaiming they want justice. What my friend wants is to get his way. He wants to be told he’s right. He wants validation for his position. He wants vengeance. Nobody wants justice – we want “our justice”.
He believes he’s earned this. That he deserves it. Ha!
My friend won’t get it. Holding out for justice is a recipe for disappointment. I know. I wanted justice for a long time. I only found peace of mind and the ability to be free of anger when I accepted what is.
I’ll settle for that.
