I’m Glad I’ll Be Dead

Posted on August 28, 2021September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

When I think about the future, I often think “I’m glad I’ll be dead”.

I can’t take the constant bad news.

  • The pandemic’s minute by minute bad news updates
  • Climate change and how it is/will devastate the world
  • The future of society- wars, famine, oppression
  • The collapse of the US as a world power

And so on.

I no longer worry about any of this:

    • The future of humanity.
    • Saddling my grandchildren with debt.
    • The human race going extinct.
    • Destroying the planet.
    • The next pandemic.
    • Getting cancer.
    • Being old and alone.
    • The state of politics.

Because I can’t do anything about any of it.

Literally nothing.

I believe that I should invest my time, attention and energy on what is most important to me.

I also believe I should focus on things I can control.

Focusing on the “big picture” issues I listed earlier can be interesting to ponder, debate and fantasize about. They can also cause anxiety, open the door for manipulation via fear & obfuscation, and in general, make daily life much less pleasant.

I choose to think differently. It’s intentional. It’s purposeful. And it’s the only way I can handle it.

Besides, one of these days I’ll be dead anyway. I’m glad I won’t be around to experience every horrible potential nightmare future scenario.
