Let The Light In

Posted on January 16, 2022January 22, 2022 by Steve Ainslie

I really despise winter. I don’t like being cold. I don’t like short days and long nights. I don’t like my nose running. I don’t like having to bundle up in 3 layers and strip down every time I go in or out of the house.

But whatever, it’s January and I live in North Carolina so I deal with it. In 6 weeks, it will be March and spring will be making its glorious entrance.

Until then, I have this daily battle. I like to keep the shades down and the drapes closed in winter to ward off the chill and drafts from the cold outside. But I crave daylight and open views.

I know it saves money if I keep the house closed up tight. But when I do it feels like I live in a tomb.

And so I purposely decided to open everything up when it is daylight outside. If I have to turn up the heat a few degrees, any a little more to the gas company each month and wear an extra layer to ward off the cold, so be it.

Seeing the daylight, seeing cold yellow sun, seeing across the street, seeing down the road and seeing the distant treetops satisfies something deep inside of me.

My dogs crave the sunlight too. They follow it around the house vying for the best spots to sunbathe through the day. When they are not sleeping, they like to stand in front of the sliding glass door or perch on the armchair so they can bark at every passerby in front of my house.

The three of us make a good team.

Woof.
