During this Covid19 pandemic, I’ve been inspired by NY State Governor Cuomo’s daily press briefings.
He simply lays out the situation and explains his plans, without bullshit, embellishment or confusion.
- How NY is Preparing
- The Reasoning Behind His Decisions
- Plan A and B, Contingency Plans and Worst Case scenario pans
He explains why NY is using social distancing to flatten the curve. He appeals for Federal assistance. He uses personal stories to drive home the impact and importance of what we are doing.
He solicits feedback and input. He asks for (and gets) volunteers.
And he doesn’t sugarcoat the bad news.
He does this just the way I used to when I managed sales teams.
After watching a few of his briefings, it occurred to me that I would be really good at helping during times like this.
I become extremely calm and level headed during emergencies. I am a planner who makes plans, contingency plans and worst case plans and can adjust them on the fly to adapt to ever changing conditions.
And I want to help others.
So after a 25 year career in tech sales and management, I have decided that my next career is going to be in logistics or operations. I am looking for a position in government, public health or a nonprofit.
As much as I think I could do a better job than our typical doofus politicians (especially congress), I don’t think I have the stomach for a career in politics.
I admire the few career politicians who have found a way to make an impact like Cuomo, like Bernie and like few others.
I think I’d be more effective doing the work behind the scenes.
I don’t need credit. I don’t want to run for election. I don’t want fame. I’d like to help.
The irony is that I came to this decision during our nation’s first complete work shutdown in history.
If I survive the pandemic, we’ll see if I feel the same way and take action to find a job.
