Out of curiosity, I will occasionally check out companies that advertise on my favorite podcasts. Usually, my initial thought is “If you are offering 20% off the first purchase for new customers, then your prices are too high.”
I am always correct with this assumption.
The latest one is a meal delivery service that positions itself as a holistic, natural, healing, nutritional health company.
Please.
You get 4 weekly deliveries that include:
- 60 meals (3 per day x 5 days a week)
- Daily Magnesium Supplement
- Daily Essentials Vitamin Pack
There are various choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner – or you can choose a “curated” meal plan: Gut Healthy, Performance, Anxiety Reducing, Gluten Free.
It’s priced at $2000 a month. That’s $33 per meal!
Here are 3 typical breakfasts:
- A bowl of oatmeal and a banana.
- Two slices of toast with preserves and peanut butter.
- Fruit bowl with a protein bar
Sample lunches:
- Hummus with cut up carrots, celery, olives and some crackers.
- A tuna fish sandwich with a side of grapes.
- A salad with candied walnuts, balsamic glaze and chicken.
I didn’t have the stamina to check out the dinners. A $33 bowl of oatmeal almost made my heart stop.
As a point of comparison, when my wife was alive we ate quite well. Our monthly grocery expense was about $600 – which included Fancy Feast cat food, Premium dog food, and high quality people food. My wife did not like cheap food and I ate a lot of meat, cheese and fruits.
We did get a lot of take out. We probably spent $400 a month on takeout food.
Still – that total – for all meals, two adults, 2 cats and 1 dog was $1000 a month.
Now that it’s just me and one dog, my monthly grocery spend is around $400-$600 depending on inflation and predatory price hikes.
I only eat meat, eggs and liver. Wiggles eats high quality dog food and treats.
My vitamins – One a Day Men’s and a Vitamin D pill costs are negligible. A couple of bottles last the entire year.
I guess somebody is buying these.
There is a convenience factor. You don’t have to think, plan or shop.
You don’t have to cook. Everything is precooked so the most you would do is heat it up.
It’s healthier than fast food and likely more nutritious than high calorie, highly-processed restaurant and takeout meals.
But wow.
I wonder who’s buying this.
‘Cause I ain’t.
