I waited for several days after adopting my dog before naming her. I created a list of names (of course), that I came up with on my own and from browsing different websites. However, I wanted to get know TBD first, before deciding on a name.
She looks somewhat intimidating so I wanted a cute name to offset her appearance and highlight her personality. She’s curious. She makes eye contact continuously and wants to be with me all the time. She loves to play. She’s a bit mischievous. She’s a bit of a prankster. She zooms around the house jumping over the sofa, onto the arm chair around the room and onto the bed.
I narrowed my short list down to these:
- Tango
- Patootie
- Munchkin
- Pookie
- Zoomie
- Sparkles
Then, over the course of a few days and a bunch of walks, I called her each of the names. Each one was fine, but none seemed perfect until #6.
Sparkles stuck. It matches her personality. It encapsulates glimmer of love in her eye, the joy in her heart and the mischievousness of her personality. It has good hard consonants and two syllables, which I like in dog names.
I am certain I’ll be calling her half a dozen other nicknames over time too – just like I have with all of my pets.
