I haven’t owned a TV for 4 years. I can’t tolerate the excessive of commercials on OTA TV and won’t pay for cable. Anything I want to watch, I stream on my iPad.
I only miss two things about TV:
- Watching it with my wife.
- NFL football
For the past 3 years, I was able to stream some NFL games for free with Yahoo Sports or the NFL app. That sufficed. I got to see most of the playoffs and watch plenty of Sunday night, Monday night and Thursday night games when there were good teams playing.
These games had far too many commercials – more than actual game time for sure. But if the games were good enough, I dealt with it.
This year, the NFL eliminated all free streaming except for Thursday night games on Amazon Prime.
So I’m done.
There’s no way I’m forking out $35-$55-$75 or more a month to be able to stream NFL games with their slew of commercials that cannot be fast forwarded past. I’m not that interested.
Nor will I pay for the NFL app, which enables live streaming of local games. The idea of paying for content “Ala carte” doesn’t appeal to me at all. I don’t buy movies, TV series, or channels. I’d rather go without.
The NFL doesn’t care that I’m leaving. You don’t care. Nobody cares.
Except me. I’ve been watching the NFL for 46 years sinceI was 8 years old. For decades, I was a rabid fan of the Steelers. That waned as I grew older.
Nonetheless, I’ve been a fan of the NFL for almost my entire life.
I’ll still catch the occasionally Thursday night game this season, if a good team is playing. But I suspect, I’ll skip it more often than not.
And chance are, I won’t miss it at all.
