When ordering dog food recently, I saw that Brooks released this year’s model of the sneakers I wear. Whenever this happens, the previous year’s model drops in price and sure enough, Amazon has last year’s model listed at 30% off. For me, that’s a sweet deal. Instead of paying $130, they are now $90.
I could care less that they are last year’s model. All of my sneakers are that version, and they are perfectly fine. My frugal instincts are to order a few pairs at this price before they run out and I am stuck paying full price for this year’s model.
That’s how I generally buy sneakers – wait for a model to be discontinued and snatch them up at a discount.
Except, I just went through my major purge. Right now, I have 4 pairs of sneakers I am rotating through and 3 more pairs in my upstairs closet waiting to be added into the rotation when the ones I’m wearing are worn out.
Will I eventually wear out of all the pairs? Of course. Probably in a year or so. But not today.
So, instead of realizing a 30% discount, I am getting a 100% discount – by using what I have and not stocking up on more.
This is a direct result of my recent purges. If I hadn’t done this, I would have definitely bought two more pairs. They wouldn’t go to waste. But they might be sitting in my closet for two years.
I could be dead by then. Or, I could have switched brands. Or…. who knows?
So for today, I’m enjoying the experience of buying nothing.
