One of the best things I did with my wardrobe was to downsize to 2 dozen pairs of identical black ankle socks. They are all I’ve worn for the past 3 years. Whenever I do laundry, matching them is easy – they all match!
I think my socks are reaching their end of life – threads are disintegrating and they are falling apart. Whenever I find a bad sock, I throw it out so my two dozen pair are slowly being winnowed down.
When I looked for replacements, I was disappointed to find this type is no longer sold. But, I found suitable replacements and bought another 2 dozen pairs. The price break for socks makes it a no brainer to buy in bulk.
I put these new socks into my drawer beside my old socks. With this many pairs, I had to jam them in. I did this and figured that over time, the drawer would get unstuffed as I threw out my old socks.
After a week of dealing with socks overflowing and having to jam them into the drawer I thought, “This is stupid…fix the problem Steve.”
I ended up pulling all of my clothes out of my dresser, filling a small bag with clothes to donate and reorganizing the entire dresser.
Now my socks fit perfectly. Everything else is neat and today and organized.
The items I donated were other socks that I’ve had for 3 years and never wear because I don’t like how they fit. Before donating them, I tried wearing them for a few days just to confirm I hated them.
I know, this seems like a mundane post.
But, it’s actually a perfect example of how I try to recognize and address when something that affects me everyday bothers me.
It still is pleasantly surprising to me how much pleasure these small actions bring me.
So, if you get mildly irritated by a squeaky door every time you open it, or you think “I’ll eventually patch that small hole in the wall that I see every morning“, or you wish you had a shelf by the front door to drop your wallet and keys onto, I recommend you get to fixing it right now.
Hopefully, you’ll get the same little jolt of pleasure I do everyday afterward.
