This past week, another mentally ill dude attempted to assassinate former president Trump. This is the 2nd attempt on Trump’s life in a few months. I wonder if it will make a difference as more politicians realize how vulnerable they are to lunatics with guns.
Many years ago, I thought the Sandy Hook school shooting would make a difference. It didn’t.
Then I thought the Parkland school massacre would make a difference. It didn’t.
Then I thought the Uvalde School shooting, the many others before and the many others after might make a difference. They didn’t.
Kids dying in school shootings is not enough to compel our federal and state leaders to do anything.
I have to think that some of our political leaders are afraid for themselves and there families. How could they not be? Most of them don’t have the secret service protection that our President, former Presidents and their families have. Any nut job with a gun could easily shoot a congressperson, a senator, a governor or a local legislator in almost any public or private setting.
Perhaps if this trend of mentally unstable people getting weapons and going after politicians continues, it will result in some attempts to do something to keep guns out of the hands of lunatics.
Common sense leads me to believe most people would agree it’s a good idea to make it difficult for people with mental disorders to easily obtain guns.
Maybe the politicians will eventually do something about it as they they become more aware of how vulnerable they are.
We have done this before and could do it again.
Maybe this time it will be different.
I won’t hold my breath.
Update – within 3 days here is what we’ve gotten from congress in terms of concrete action plans…crickets. Of course there’s been some political finger pointing about “rhetoric” and blaming the secret service. As for meaningful action, nada.
I guess many more people will have to die before congress does anything. That’s too bad. It’s not the choice I would make if I had the power to do something meaningful.
