One surprising result of getting a second dog has been that I am no longer noticing every little ache and pain I have throughout the day. I still have them – my knee injury is taking months to heal, my foot injury I fear is chronic, and the older I get, the more aches and pains seem to crop up.
But, when I walking two dogs, I have to pay attention to them both at all times. Wiggles is usually hunting up something nasty to eat and Sparkles is still learning how to walk with us. The sudden appearance of a bike, bunny, deer or dog can turn one or both of them from a calm sniffer into a barking, lunging lunatic.
I also enjoy watching them interact. They play together a lot. When walking, they sometimes team up to track scents. Other times, they go divergent ways as they investigate sights, scents and sounds. They signal each other with growls, barks, bumps and huffs. They turn to look at me for reassurance and to express affection.
They are pretty cute and a lot of fun.
It certainly is better than thinking about myself all the time.
