Removing Labels

Posted on September 2, 2024 by Steve Ainslie

This past June was the 5 year anniversary of moving into my current home. That’s the longest I’ve ever lived in one place for my entire life. It’s kind of nice. In fact, it’s more than nice, it’s wonderful.

I am constantly making small adjustments and improvements to my home, from big projects like replacing the floors and staining the cabinets, to small projects like replacing all the handles and painting the bathrooms.

I have established relationships and routines with my veterinarian, dentist, surgeon, endodontist, urgent care, hospital, swimming pools, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

I am very familiar with the streets and places in my neighborhood and within an 8 mile radius of my home.

I haven’t had to “start over” since 2019.

I had gotten so used to starting over that it was a given in my life. I won’t list all of the home improvements I barely had time to enjoy, the friendships that never got off the ground, the excellent service providers I left and the simple feeling of being grounded.

When I moved into this place, I had to label all of my light switches because I was constantly flipping the wrong switch. I’ve did this in previous homes I owned too because by the time I memorized the switches, we’d be moving again.

Last week, I removed the last few light switch labels.

I ain’t going anywhere.
