Yesterday, I helped the plumber take my new water heater upstairs. He had a special stair-climbing dolly, but to negotiate the turns we had to stand it straight up and manually lift the dolly with the water heater strapped to it. I’d estimate it was over 200 lbs
With two fit men working together, it was easy (the dolly helped!). But even during the manual lifts, the entire configuration felt like it weighed only 50 lbs. In fact, it felt so light I was surprised and had to ease off a little so I didn’t move it too quickly.
The shock for me was the assistance of another strong man. I realized afterward that I’d been lifting and moving heavy items almost always by myself for the past 3 decades. My wife was petite, plus she had a bad back so I rarely would let her help. My stepson was never around when I needed a helping hand, and god forbid I’d ask a neighbor to help (unless I was actively being crushed from above).
I’m used to sliding, pivoting, using straps and levers, straining etc.
Next time I have to move something heavy , I’m going to look for another strong man to help.
