After injuring my shoulder a few weeks ago, I finally realized that my workout regimen during the past 7 years was causing me problems. Although I gained strength in certain movements and learned to move more gracefully, I over-specialized. This contributed to injuries, lack of progress, a general loss of strength, overuse and muscle imbalances.
As I was creating my new well-rounded program based on exercises and programs I’d done before, I kept coming across discussions and tutorials about using Indian Clubs to address shoulder problems.
I never had an interest in Indian Clubs before. I have extensive experience with many fitness tools and programs utilizing barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, ropes, bands, suspension trainers, medicine balls, machines and other equipment.
However, times are different. Currently I’m rehabbing an injured shoulder and dealing with stiffness, repetitive motion symptoms and inadequate shoulder functionality.
Needless to say, I started swinging Indian Clubs last week*.
I’ve just entered the Plain of Suckitude. Everything feels awkward, stiff and unintuitive. On top of this, I’m rehabbing my shoulder and lower back.
After a 100 days of practicing using the clubs (plus whatever time it takes for my injuries to heal), I’ll have the basics down and will reach a level of semi-competence. Eventually, I’ll progress to competence and then proficiency. I’ve been here before. This isn’t my first rodeo.
In the meantime, I’ve already decided to enjoy the process. Despite the challenges, it’s been kind of fun.
*Here’s one of the videos on YouTube I’ve been following. I like this guy’s attitude, approach and accent. His videos have been helpful.
