Technique-al Training

Posted on January 17, 2022January 18, 2022 by Steve Ainslie

The online drawing course I’m taking at Udemy has been better than I expected. I’m now into my fourth day. Each lesson introduces one or more new concepts / techniques.

It’s exactly what I wanted to get from the course. It is self-paced so I can skip over the fluff (like “post your drawings to our Facebook page” and “refer a friend to get a discount off your next course”). The techniques taught are immediately useful. I’ve learned how to draw a realistic human eye, cartoon characters using basic shapes and landscapes. I understand how to use contrast lines, shading, tones and shadows. Even my first clumsy attempts at drawing are better than what I’ve ever done before.

Just like when I learned how to paint, I needed to learn technique for drawing. I was never taught this in any meaningful way despite having 12 years of “art class” in public school.

Each lesson was completed in less than an hour. I will spend many more hours practicing and creating drawings than I will spend watching the course.

I am amazed at how much I’ve learned in such a short time. This s going to change how I draw, paint and see the world.

Below is some my work from my first four classes.
