There’s been a lot of talk on podcasts lately about the potential dangers of AI. Many people are predicting dire, catastrophic changes for humanity regarding labor, inequality, power, government, war and work. It kind of freaks me out to think about it – especially when my mind gets spun up around science-fiction inspired dystopian futures and gloomy projections from intelligent people
When this happens, I have to do something.
- First, I stop listening to the podcast.
- Second, I remind myself that this is all speculation, often from uniformed people. And I already know what happens when people predict the future.
- Third, I remind myself that I have a plan, in case everything goes to shit.
I refuse to torture myself with worries about potential suffering, withering away, starving, becoming destitute, living through armageddon, economic or societal collapse. I don’t plan to stick around for a dystopian future. Nor can I do anything to prevent one.
So instead, today I deleted the podcast and took the dogs for a long leisurely walk in the sun. Tonight. I’ll eat dinner, watch a mediocre show on Netflix and then watch the first half of the Super Bowl, if I can get it on Tubi for free.
Tomorrow, I’ll wake up, walk the dogs, read a little and workout.
If the end of the world comes, I’m ready. Until then, I’ll try to enjoy the small pleasures life brings me.
