Podcasters and news reporters are citing “surveys” that list reasons why some people are not getting vaccines:
- Can’t get time off from work to get vaccine.
- Employer doesn’t offer PTO for getting vaccine.
- Employer doesn’t offer PTO if I miss work due to vaccine side effects.
- Worried about cost of vaccine.
- Cannot get to a vaccine location.
- Too busy – cannot make the time.
Please. Give me a break.
Does anyone really believe these excuses?
I guarantee that every person who can’t find the the time for a vaccine watches TV, browses Facebook, goes to bars, hangs out and does plenty of other leisure activities when not working.
I’m not buying that every non-vaxxed person cannot find 30 minutes to get a shot.
As for work not giving PTO for a vaccine or for possible side effects what do these people think will happen if they get Covid? If work doesn’t give you PTO and you are sick enough with Covid to not go to work you will also not be getting PTO.
Worried about the cost? How can you have missed the “free” vaccinations message that is emphasized by every public official, ad, influencer, article and website.
Can’t get to a vaccine location? Really? How do you get groceries now? Where do you buy your clothes? Do you ever leave your house to buy anything? I suppose if you live in a desolate rural area it would be less convenient than a city or town, but I don’t believe the 40% of the country that is not vaccinated all live in places that are truly that remote.
It’s all bullshit.
The reasons that seem likely to me are more like:
- I’m afraid of shots.
- I’m lazy.
- I don’t think I’ll get Covid.
- I believe in conspiracy theories
- I don’t trust: vaccines, the government, big Pharma, etc.
- If I get Covid, I’ll be asymptomatic.
Instead of our federal, state and local government trying to convince people to get vaccinated, I think they should spend their energy and our tax money in other places.
The people who aren’t getting vaccinated have had ample opportunities to be convinced. If we won’t force them to get vaccinated, then they will have to suffer the consequences – whatever those might be.
History tells us that all pandemics eventually end or at least cycle on and off -even those that have no vaccines or treatments.
Perhaps that’s what will happen with this pandemic as well.
Until then, I suspect people who are unvaccinated will suffer more than people who are vaccinated. They may lose privileges like work, dining out, travel, healthcare, etc. They may be sicker. They may die.
I don’t think anyone “deserves” to get Covid. I wish we didn’t need vaccines or treatments that have potentially bad side effects. But too bad. It’s here. It’s a worldwide pandemic. And we have few options for dealing with it.
I have little sympathy to offer the unvaxxed (in the US) who have the had ample opportunity to get it.
As adults, we make our decisions and live with the consequences.
