Lately, I have been running into a woman at my pool whose swims coincide with mine. Sometimes I’ll see her as she’s on the way in and I’m leaving. Other times, I’ll see her walk to an empty lane while I’m in mid workout.
She’s got curly gray hair so I assume she’s around my age. It’s hard to tell because what I draws my gaze is her big warm smile when she says hello. Her smile reminds me of my wife. She’s someone I’d like to get to know.
I probably swim next to her for several hours each week – but because I never see her actually get into the pool and all the regular women wear bathing caps and goggles, I have no idea who she is when she’s in the pool!
Besides, I wear earplugs and goggles and never stop swimming so striking up a conversation while in the pool will never happen unless we’re ever forced to share a lane.
That’s OK. I’m fully convinced I’d be terrible date at this point in my life anyway. I’m quite content and set in my ways. Judging from her big smile, she’s quite content too.
So, unless fate intervenes, I’ll just bask in the occasional big warm smile when I run into her.
