With the recent labor shortages and post/in pandemic worker shortages, employees have been leaving jobs, demanding higher salaries and better benefits and opting out of work altogether.
I predict this won’t last long. After all, the poor always get screwed over.
Here’s what I think will happen:
Some business will close down because they cannot afford to pay employees more.
Some business will pay more and treat their employees better – in the short term. Once a recession hits or pandemic relief ceases or rent abatement ends, those short term concessions will be eliminated.
Many business will eliminate employees through automation and business process changes.
(Former) workers will want to buy things. Those who quit to “pursue their dreams through fulfilling, meaningful work” will return to work because their desire for iPhones, clothes, cars, and stuff will outweigh they desire for meaningful work.
I think a lot of young adults (millennials, post millennials) believe they can change the world. I know I did when I was their age. I thought I was smarter and better than older people. I though I could bend the world to my will.
I couldn’t.
Neither can they.
Reality has a way of hitting you smack in the face. Bills, expenses and established systems of power will inevitably push back the recent tidal wave of outrage, demands for higher wages and fairness.
I’m not saying this is a good thing or a bad thing. It just “Is“.
