As long as I have had pets as an adult, they’ve slept in my bed. When we got our first dog Ziggy, he would jump up on our bed and curl himself into a tight little circle at the foot of our bd between us where he’d sleep the entire night.
When we added Shortie, our mini poodle to the mix, he would snuggle up again my wife or I. He was always up for a tummy rub and a kiss.
Years later, we rescued cats. Some liked to sleep at the foot of the bed. Others under the covers. One in the pillowcase and one liked to sleep on my wife’s head!
Snickers is a burrower. She wants to get under the covers and then snug up again my butt or legs. Wiggles does the same – unless she decides to step on the pillow next to my head like the Princess and the Pea.
Snickers likes to ay hello and get a quick pet but then wants to be left alone all night. Wiggles, on the other hand, is always up for petting and will wake me throughout the night with head nudges to pet her.
It’s a good thing I have always had small dogs. If I ever get a big mutt or a lab or standard poodle, I might need to upgrade to a bigger bed.
I’ve been alone since my wife died nearly three years ago. I haven’t dated anyone, although I tried. After 29 years of having someone who loved me just an arm’s length away, it’s very comforting to reach out in the middle of the night and feel one of my dogs right there by my side.
Would I prefer having a woman beside me? Sometimes I think I would. Sometimes I think not.
But, if I ever do, she’s going to have to be a dog lover because I can’t imagine living any other way.
