Showering On The Road

Posted on April 21, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

Something that everyone talks about when living on the road is showers.  Everyone seems obsessed with replicating as close to a home based shower as possible. Some travelers stay in full service campgrounds with showers (expensive). Others get gym memberships and go to towns to shower (traffic). Some use public recreational facilities (yuck). Some have…

The Project That Saved My Life

Posted on April 20, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

Back in 2006 I saw a therapist. I had just quit drinking. I clearly was struggling with depression and anxiety, among other issues.  In time, therapy and sobriety helped me to deal with my problems and become the man I always wanted to be. One day, after making a lot of progress, I told my…

Thinking About My Wife

Posted on April 18, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

I think about my wife every day. i don’t think about her every minute of every day because some minutes I’m thinking things like: Oh crap, was that my exit I just passed? Where am I going to sleep tonight? Is that wheel on my camper bowing  outward? How am I going to turn around here?…

It’s All Theoretical Until You Have Experience

Posted on April 16, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

I’ve been planning my road trip for months. I’ve done hundreds of hours of research. I’ve talked to experienced friends, bloggers, campers and survivalists for advice. I’ve read books, scoured the Internet and watched far too many youtube videos. I studied maps. I practiced packing. I obsessed over every detail. My planning was flawless. Things…

The Biggest Rottweiler I’ve Ever Seen

Posted on April 16, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

When I parked on BLM land in New Mexico, I was exhausted. It was cold and windy. I had driven for several days with little rest. After checking in with mom and Zack, I put Snickers in the camper and we both fell hard asleep. A few hours later, I woke up. I got out…

Gone

Posted on April 13, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

I am on the road. I left my old home and my old life four days ago. First stop was near Tampa Florida to drop in to say hello (and goodbye) to an old high school friend. From there I overnighted in a busy Wal-Mart lot in Bushnell Fl, a highway rest stop with truckers…

My New Home

Posted on April 1, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

There are times when I am fully immersed in prepping for my life on the road. Those are good times. I am challenged. I am focused. I am learning. I am meeting new people and being presented with new ideas. I thought I’d share a few pictures and recent highlights. This is my truck. It’s…

Empty House, Empty Life

Posted on April 1, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

My friend Bruce asked if I was having second thoughts about going on the road next week. I told him that I can’t wait to get out of here. He asked if I was ready for this adventure. I told him I wasn’t looking for an adventure. The truth is, I don’t know what else…

Visiting An Old Friend

Posted on March 28, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

The only positive thing about my brief facebook experiment last year was that an old friend reached out to me. In high school we were good friends. We’d round up a group of our mutual friends and go to dances, haunted houses, miniature golfing and more. She remained my friend even though I would consistently…

It’s All Coming Together

Posted on March 26, 2019September 4, 2021 by Steve Ainslie

Everything’s coming together. In two weeks, I’ll be off on my journey. Both cats are safe and appear to be happy in their new loving homes. The house is under contract. The inspection, survey and appraisal are done. We’re now just waiting for the closing in April. I pick up my camper next week.
